I had a tremendous run with Ben Dunn this morning. Ben is getting ready for the Massanutten 100 in May. He is in great shape and is looking at getting in a good long run at his next tune-up race this weekend in Moab; the 12 hour event. Good luck to him. We had a great chat this morning as we put in a 2 hour run for 14 miles and about 1600′. The run was splendid with warm morning temps and good views. I look forward to many more runs with him this spring. Tim Parr and I ran Signal yesterday afternoon in 50 degree temps, sunshine, and incredible views in every direction. On both of these runs we opted to run out to Tomichi Village (East of Town) and then head due North up road 3123 to the saddle just below Signal Peak. This route has much less snow and fewer wind-loaded sections on it (compared to the typical approach up the ridge-line from the southwest); making the running much more consistent and better. Of course there are still several significantly muddy sections out there… but not enough to deter us.
This was my 3rd trip up Signal Peak in 24 hours and is setting me up nicely for another big week of volume. I am targeting over 125 miles this week, with as much vertical as possible. In addition, I will be getting in another set of repeat miles this week with Ryan Burch. Last week was solid for me; with 120 miles of running; about 15,000′ (estimate)(possibly inflated) of climbing and 1 solid speed session of repeat miles: (5:45, 5:45, 5:42, 5:39)(with 2-3 minutes rest). I felt good during this session; my legs are strong and my fitness is coming around. I have not bumped my long run up yet; and this week will be the first time I do that. I am planning a 3.5 hour long run this weekend down in Fruita; on the Spring Desert Ultra race course. Generally I am feeling very good. Although I am clearly not as fit as last summer (July, August)… I feel much much much more fresh in mind and body. My mind has some clarity and a strong desire to be out there running and enjoying the process. My body, although not perfectly fit, has a ‘freedom of motion’ higher than I felt all of last year. My body just seems to be moving well; comfortably and without too much strain. I do not know what to attribute this to; but I will take it and I am looking forward to making bigger fitness gains to capitalize on this great feeling. Excitement is building. Momentum is happening. The Fruita 50 miler (Spring Desert Ultra) will be a great event. (http://geminiadventures.com/DesertRATSfestival.html) I am looking forward to this…. stay tuned. Train well. Live well. DC
